  1. Thank you for expressing interest in the QB-Net.  QB-Net is a network
  2. specializing in BASIC programming.  It is not limited to a single version
  3. of BASIC or to a single compiler vendor.
  4.  
  5. The network will consist of 20 conference.  These conference fall into
  6. two broad groupings:
  7.     1-10   BASIC Language from generic to specific topic conferences
  8.     11-20  BASIC Vendors --conference for and by a vendor of software
  9.                            products relating to BASIC
  10. At a later date we may expand although this will be resisted.
  11.     > 21   Added vendors at such time needed
  12.     > 30   Special projects area if 1-10 fills and space is needed
  13.                                
  14. Initial Conferences:
  15.    1  BASIC SNIPPETS
  16.       Aimed at accumulating a collection of short subprograms that
  17.       perform a usable task.  The collection can then be discussed
  18.       in this area and additional knowledge imparted for the group
  19.       benefit.
  20.    2  BASIC Chit-Chat
  21.       An unstructured area to discuss everyone's favorite programming
  22.       language.  It will also contain general information and announcements
  23.       for the group as a whole.  It is the only conference area where
  24.       general, informational postings may be left.
  25.    3  BASIC Novice
  26.       A help forum for the novice programmer.  This is the place to
  27.       discuss all those "dumb" questions that we all had when we began
  28.       our programming efforts.
  29.   10  VENDOR 
  30.       a place for vendors to meet users. Also a place for those vendors
  31.       who don't want to maintain a separate conference of their own or
  32.       who's conference was discontinued.  Advertising is welcome on any
  33.       remotely related BASIC products.
  34.       
  35.   20  will be used as a temporary startup conference.  A place where
  36.       the startup details can be ironed out.  This (and all conferences)
  37.       will be public and no private administrative or sysop conference
  38.       is contemplated.
  39.       
  40. Proposed/Potential conference additions:
  41.     PROJECTS
  42.       Temporarily assigned for group projects that might be of interest
  43.       to various participants
  44.     DOORS
  45.       An area for authors of DOOR or BBS specific programs to congregate
  46.     PowerBASIC 
  47.       An area for the Spectra boosters to congregate.
  48.     PDS
  49.       Discussion specific to the expanded "Professional" compiler.
  50.  
  51. VENDOR CONFERENCES
  52.     ANY vendor may have a conference.  He becomes the de facto host.  He
  53.     keeps the conference as long as it remains an active forum.  The net
  54.     will make available areas 11-20 as vendor conferences and, after filling,
  55.     the least active conference will be on the bubble for 
  56.     
  57. Network Operations:    
  58.     The network's primary hub will be The Toolkit BBS located in 
  59.     Northwest Indiana--near Chicago  (219)696-3415  HST Dual Standard
  60.  
  61.     The network will be based on the QNET/RNET packet handling systems.
  62.     
  63.     Becoming a member BBS:
  64.        All boards are welcome to become members of this network.  This
  65.        is without an approval process or any voting and multiple boards
  66.        in the same calling area are able to carry the conferences.
  67.     
  68.     Becoming a member HUB:
  69.        Any node willing to provide access to their regional compatriots
  70.        is welcome to begin operating as a HUB.  They may not charge for
  71.        the echo but may charge for basic access.  Any node not interested
  72.        in such a program is welcome to call another HUB and the primary
  73.        HUB (Toolkit) will always grant free mail access.
  74.  
  75.     Conference Hosts:
  76.        Each conference area will decide on a conference host.  This is
  77.        by open ballot within the conference.  Any host may also be 
  78.        removed based on similar voting--the majority of those voting to
  79.        rule.
  80.     
  81. Network Rules:
  82.     The network will run without imposing any major restrictions.  
  83.     The following rules will apply and all attempts will be made to
  84.     avoid adding more:
  85.     
  86.     1.  Limit Quoting
  87.         Overquoting causes unnecessary expense to the sysop--who's 
  88.         typically absorbing the cost of frequent LD calls to provide
  89.         the messages to the participants.  Please always keep that
  90.         in mind when quoting along with the axiom LESS IS MORE>
  91.     2.  Personal Attacks
  92.         are unacceptable.  If a participant develops a reputation for
  93.         such acts, his local system will be asked to remove him from
  94.         the echo for a period of time as a cooling off period.  If
  95.         after such a period such attacks are resumed the system will
  96.         be required by the network to remove his access to the QB-NET.
  97.     3.  No ANSI graphics
  98.     
  99. Cross-network echoing:
  100.     Any other network is welcome to echo any or all of the conferences.
  101.     Their only requirement is that they assure that their member boards
  102.     will support the limited rules and not impose additional rules on
  103.     the participating boards concerning these conferences.

  107. BBS requirements/request:
  108.    Upon becoming a member the member bbs is asked to:
  109.    
  110.    Make available the network packet for users as a free download and
  111.    request its downloading by all those who they are provide with access 
  112.    to these conference.
  113.    
  114.    Report their participation to The Toolkit via a private message to the
  115.    sysop of their status and any status changes.  This message to include:
  116.       BBS Name
  117.       Sysop Name
  118.       Phone Number
  119.       Location  
  120.       Modem  used
  121.       BBS software
  122.       Short (3-line max) Bio of the board
  123.       Conference carried 
  124.    It should be provided in format:
  125.    
  126.    Set up the bulletin group for the associated conferences.  These
  127.    bulletins are standard information for the conference participants
  128.    and maintain by the conference host via the main hubs.  If you bbs
  129.    software does not permit conference bulletins, they may be carried
  130.    as part of the network packet or as a separate archive.

  132.    Two types of board will be supported.  Partial participants--those
  133.    boards who carry only part of the conferences being made available.
  134.    FULL participating boards will setup a block of conference and 
  135.    include all active and inactive conferences as a block.  This allows
  136.    for quick setup of new or temporary conferences

  139.   The Toolkit is a programmer and power user board carrying every possible
  140.   file for the BASIC programmer as well as an eclectic mix sure to warm the
  141.   cockles of all computer users.   1.2+ gigabytes of files always available.
  142.     This information will be added to the list of boards carrying the echo
  143.     and will become part of the network packet.

  145. Files that will be available for download distribution from The Toolkit.
  146.   QBBlt##.ARJ -- bulletins associated with conference ##
  147.   QB-NET.ARJ -- a packet for sysop and users about the net and its operation.
  148.   QB!##!##.ARJ -- the archived messages from the conferences
  149.  
  150. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED, The Toolkit BBS is at 219-696-3415.  The board is
  151. a call-back system.  If you are interested but it's a one-shot call, you
  152. can quickly get on the board's mini area using HANLIN SOFTWARE as the
  153. name and SHAREWARE as the password.  This will allow you to leave a
  154. message to the sysop--be sure to sign it with your real name as the
  155. message source is always shown with the erzatz name you're loggin on under.

  157. info about it at the time of logon.
